How Coronavirus is affecting the IT Industry

The IT industry is beginning to feel the impact of the Coronavirus outbreak, as Chinese suppliers temporarily close factories.

The closures, which were initially expected to last through the Chinese New Year celebrations in late January have still not been lifted.

Apple were the first of the tech giant to issue a Coronavirus warning, ahead of a shareholder meeting earlier this week, with others such as Microsoft, Lenovo and HP Enterprise following suite.

Many products are either manufactured in China, or use parts from Chinese vendors, shortages for various smartphones PC’s. VR headsets and other tech accessories are expected.

Foxconn Technology Group, the worlds largest electronics contract manufacturer, who supply a number of manufactures including Apple, are making efforts to bring it’s factories in China back online, but state that this will not be at the expense of worker safety.

COVID-19 has also taken out IT industry events, with GSMA calling off ‘Mobile World Congress’ as big names including Cisco, Nokia, Facebook and BT all cancelled their plans to attend. The Game Developers Conference, due to take place in San Francisco in March has been cancelled as well as HP Reinvent a Global Partner event which was due to take place from March 24-26 in Anaheim, California.
