As the Coronavirus continues to stir widespread fear of a global public health crisis, cyber criminals are using it as a means to spread a rather different sort of virus.
Cyber security firms have found malicious emails, disguised as official notifications from health organisations, containing Word Documents, Video clips and PDF files, indicating they contain instructions on how to protect yourself from the Coronavirus and instructions on what symptoms to look for. However, the files actually contains code which attempts to install a variant of “Emotet” malware.
Cyber criminals attempting to capitalise on current events is unfortunately nothing new and as people become increasingly worried about their health, it’s highly likely that these email attacks will increase over coming weeks. We recommend avoiding all forms of suspicious links advertising exclusive content. Use only official sources for information and pay particular attention to the download file extension.
